The Ministry of National Education and New Citizenship organized a strategic workshop on Friday, February 7, 2025, in Kinshasa, aimed at developing a national school feeding strategy. The event brought together representatives from the government and the World Food Programme (WFP) to discuss the establishment of school cafeterias in educational institutions across the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The main objective is to consolidate free education, improve students’ nutrition, and promote their access to quality education.

These cafeterias ensure a balanced meal every day

Tracy Ntumba, the ministry’s advisor for partnerships and project cooperation, emphasized the importance of school meals. According to her, “these meals often represent the only source of adequate nutrition for students during school hours.” In many countries, similar initiatives have proven effective in helping children concentrate and succeed in school. The workshop highlighted the potential benefits of school cafeterias. By ensuring a balanced meal every day, the Ministry of Education hopes not only to improve students’ health but also to reduce the dropout rate. This initiative aims to offer all children, regardless of their economic situation, the opportunity to pursue a quality education. However, challenges remain in implementing this strategy. Participants discussed logistical issues, funding, and training for cafeteria staff. Effective coordination between the government and partners, such as the WFP, will be essential to overcoming these obstacles and ensuring the program’s success. It is important to emphasize that the development of a national school feeding strategy represents a turning point for education in the DRC. By ensuring that every student has access to nutritious meals, the Ministry of National Education and New Citizenship is committed to creating a healthier and more equitable learning environment conducive to academic success for all children.
