On Monday, May 29, education officials from Haut-Katanga 1 conducted an inspection at Serafina Elementary School, located on 15th Street in the third district of the Kaponda Sud neighborhood, Katuba commune, within the Lubumbashi 2 educational subdivision. They wanted to personally verify that the process of refunding the illegal fees collected by the principal from graduating elementary students for the National Elementary School Graduation Exam (ENAFEP) was proceeding smoothly. This has been done. After the reimbursement, Joseph Mwinkeu Tshiend and Nicolas Nyange Bizy, respectively director of the educational province and provincial chief inspector, reminded the parents of the graduating students at this school that “primary education in public schools is free.” These students will also not have to pay anything to “take the ENAFEP.” Later, education authorities visited several schools in the Katuba district. At the Saint Emmanuel School Complex, the elementary school principal was caught “demanding 7,500 Congolese francs from graduating elementary students to facilitate their participation in the ENAFEP.” He was immediately suspended. At the Larousse School Complex, education authorities expressed concern over the conditions in which students are studying. The administrators of this institution were reprimanded. The National Primary School Graduation Exam is strictly free of charge in both private and public schools. The Ministry of Education is calling for the reporting of any offenders via its toll-free hotline, 178, which is now operational. Reports can also be made via WhatsApp at +243 840018006. The 178 hotline is available free of charge through any mobile network provider. Dan de Dieu Kayanda
