Free primary education is now in effect in the Upper Katanga 1 educational province. This was confirmed by Henry Mungomba, mayor of the city of Likasi, during recent discussions with Nicolas Nyange Bizy, the chief provincial inspector of the Upper Katanga 1 educational province, who was on a tour of the region. The mayor of Likasi was responding to remarks made by a local resident who, during President Félix Tshisekedi’s visit on the sidelines of the election campaign, claimed that the constitutional provision for free primary education in public schools did not apply in Likasi. “As the city’s most informed authority, I must refute the false information brought to the attention of the Head of State by an individual who does not understand the scope of free education. It is strictly enforced in public primary schools. I want to make it clear that here in Likasi, it is fully in effect. People need to know that accredited private schools are not covered by free education, and the fees mentioned by this individual are legal fees paid at the secondary level and for technical programs,” clarified Henry Mungomba. It should be noted that free education is a constitutional provision implemented by Head of State Felix Antoine Tshisekedi since 2019. Dan de Dieu Kayanda, Paola Mawete, and Aphy Nzanga
