The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) will build a modern elementary school and renovate the Kamalondo and Katuba elementary schools in the Haut Katanga educational province. This was announced following a meeting on April 26, 2024, between Mr. Sylvain Nzaba, UNICEF’s Education Department Officer, and Joseph Mwinkeu Tshiend, Provincial Director of the Haut Katanga 1 EPST. "We have come to announce that work is scheduled to begin on April 29. We also plan to renovate the Kamalondo and Katuba primary schools once we have met all the prerequisites," stated Sylvain Nzaba. This work is part of UNICEF’s contribution to supporting the free education initiative launched in 2019 by President Tshisekedi. It should be noted that this project has enabled more than 6,000,000 children—who had been kept out of school due to a lack of resources—to return to formal education. Proved Joseph Mwinkeu thanked UNICEF, a long-standing technical and financial partner of the EPST. These new schools join several others built in recent years to improve learning conditions for students whom the free public primary education initiative has brought back into the educational system.
