In a letter addressed to the provincial chief inspectors on October 20, 2023, the Inspector General of the EPST, Jacques Odia Musungayi, warned against accepting bribes in connection with the review of final-year students’ records. In his letter, the Inspector General reiterated that this process is strictly free of charge, as it is part of the inspectors’ routine duties. “I regret to note that, despite the relevant instructions on this matter, certain inspectors, in collusion with corrupt school principals, are engaging in this type of unethical behavior,” the document states. He adds, “I urge you to act with the utmost determination, in accordance with the laws and regulations that govern us, against any recalcitrant parties.” It should be noted that the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education has set up a toll-free number, 178, to enable parents, students, and anyone else who benefits from its services to break the silence regarding any misconduct observed in schools.
