In a press release issued on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, the Ministry of National Education and New Citizenship (EDU-NC) informs the national and international community that it has just launched an emergency education program aimed at ensuring access to learning despite the security situation prevailing in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the provincial capitals of North Kivu and South Kivu have been under occupation for nearly a month.
“This program includes distance learning and special provisions for the preparation and administration of certification exams. At the same time, school kits and essential supplies are being provided for the most vulnerable students,” the press release states.
Beyond these educational measures, a call is being made for a general mobilization.
“Education is a fundamental right, and its systematic destruction constitutes a serious crime against future generations. We call on all citizens, civil society organizations, and the international community to mobilize for the protection of schools and children in the DRC,” the document emphasizes.
According to the press release, the educational community must be protected from the violence and trauma caused by the current instability. For the record, the current crisis has led to the closure of 2,594 schools, including 1,483 in North Kivu and 1,111 in South Kivu, affecting 1,108,962 children. Moïse Dianyishayi
