The Director of the Ituri 1 Educational Province, Jean Jacques Masumbuko, raised awareness among parents on Thursday, February 22, regarding protection against the plague epidemic. This awareness campaign comes after a three-day suspension of school activities in nine schools within the Djugu 2 EPST sub-division. “I am raising awareness through your channel because the plague kills. We must protect ourselves, sanitize schools, and spread the word about the plague and all kinds of waterborne diseases so that we can spare our children from this devastating disease,” he emphasized. He continued, “It’s not easy to raise children until they reach the age of responsibility. You’ll find a parent who has a good bed with a mattress, but the children sleep on the floor. I am not criticizing the way people in Rethy sleep, but scientifically, it has been proven that the plague is spread by rats and other insects that thrive in unsanitary conditions.” Indeed, the plague is a contagious and deadly skin disease caused by a bacillus. It is transmitted by the rat flea. Following the confirmed cases recorded in the Rethy health zone, school activities were suspended from February 20 to 22 in the Kpadroma, Shun, Apolo, EP 2 Kpadroma, Gola, Baidjo, Bwa, Mont-Bleu, and Rethy preschools and elementary schools.
