To mark the end of Women’s Month, the Kalamu 1 subdivision of the Kinshasa-Funa educational province, in collaboration with the Bénie Christian School, organized a workshop to raise awareness among female teachers about digital technology. The event took place on Friday, March 24, 2023, at the Émergence Primary School in Yolo Nord, in the municipality of Kalamu. The activity centered on the theme “Technological Change and Education in the Digital Age to Achieve Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls.” Emphasis was placed on the need for teachers in general, and female teachers in particular, to adapt to the technological changes of the current era. “Since teachers are also educators, they must always stay abreast of developments. This is why today’s trainer emphasized the evolution of technology and its contribution to the teaching profession. “We are already working with the organizer to develop additional modules to continue equipping the teaching staff,” said Dieudonné Mbulanga Kayembe, head of the Kalamu 1 sub-division. For her part, Nelly Lubuma, promoter of the Bénie Christian School and initiator of the activity, believes that mastering the concepts learned will further empower the participants—in this case, these teachers. “We have discovered that technology can enable us to conduct quick research and deliver the curriculum effectively. It can help us save time and cover the entire curriculum, as developed by the relevant ministry. For example, if a student is sick and cannot attend school, technology can allow them to follow lessons remotely. During the rainy season, some parents prefer to keep their children at home for safety reasons. Technology can therefore allow children to study remotely under such conditions,” said one of the workshop participants, Baona Pamba, a teacher at Yolo Sud Primary School No. 2. Delighted by Minister Tony Mwaba’s reappointment as head of Primary, Secondary, and Technical Education (EPST), this teacher hopes the minister will push further toward the digitization of education. “We thank God because our minister has been reappointed. We only ask him to implement projects that will enable teachers and students to access digital tools,” she added. It should be noted that International Women’s Day was celebrated this year under the theme “Equal Digital Education for Peace and the Empowerment of Women and Girls in the DRC.” Bruno Nsaka.
