Mavinga Félicité and Exaucé Mputu Kanga took first place in their respective categories at the women’s mathematics competition, held as part of Science Week at the Institut de la Gombe in Kinshasa on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. This Girls’ Math Day was organized under the patronage of Prime Minister H.E. SAMA Lukonde, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Children, as well as the Ministry of Primary, Secondary, and Technical Education (EPST). According to the jury, these two young girls particularly distinguished themselves through their exceptional performance in their respective categories. The event was attended by students from various educational districts of Kinshasa. During the competition, many of the topics covered were familiar to the participants, as they were part of the subjects taught in school. This familiarity allowed the girls to feel at ease and give their best during the tests, emphasizing that mathematics is not solely a subject reserved for boys. When interviewed, several of them expressed confidence in their abilities and skills to excel in this field, before expressing their gratitude to the authorities who organized the event. Women’s Mathematics Day is of great importance because it highlights girls’ potential in science and mathematics. It encourages young girls to pursue their studies in these fields and to consider careers in science. By promoting girls’ participation in competitions and events of this kind, Congolese society is working toward gender equality and fostering the emergence of a new generation of brilliant female scientists and mathematicians. To this end, everyone is asked to support and encourage young girls to break the silence and embrace science fields, which also offer many opportunities for their empowerment and personal growth.
