Since Thursday, August 17, trainers have been participating in training sessions on the reform initiatives accompanying the introduction of free primary education in the Kinshasa-Funa educational province. These include the management of operating costs, the Grievance Management Mechanism (GMM), aspects of environmental management—including hygiene, health, and safety—as well as civic engagement. Rachel Mundungu, technical assistant for the Project for Equity and Strengthening of the Education System (PERSE), stated that this training aims, among other things, to promote good governance and a safe school environment. “Stakeholders are learning to better manage operating costs and to make better use of the complaint management mechanism, ensuring that the community is also aware of its role in management, but also that the school is aware of the need to provide the necessary information so that collaboration with the community is effective,” she said. She added, “Free education means all children in school, and so we must ensure that student retention is effective (...) The funds the government allocates to schools for operations do not belong to the principals; therefore, to ensure these funds are managed properly, principals must be educated on how to use these funds.” Launched today, this training organized by PERSE will last five days, through August 21. The participants will then train school principals and members of the school management committees on these same topics. The training for school principals will take place from August 22 to 27.
