On Monday, December 5, Jean Tshisekedi Kabasele, director of the Kongo-Central 2 educational province, spoke to schoolchildren in his province about the role trees play in combating global warming. The event took place in observance of World Tree Day, celebrated on December 5 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Speaking to students at EP 2 Loma Kola in Mbanza Ngungu, Mr. Jean Tshisekedi Kabasele highlighted the benefits of trees as a valuable resource that provides shelter and cools the atmosphere for other living species.

“An entire ecosystem is thus created around the tree,” he emphasized, before inviting the audience to contribute to the goal of planting 1 billion trees by 2023 set by the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“We must plant trees in school settings, and I urge school principals in my jurisdiction to monitor all the trees that the children have planted. “Dear students, you must plant at least one tree per week, because trees play a very important role in the environment. For example, the fruits we eat come from trees. Trees generate the fresh air that humans need to breathe. Without trees, there is no life,” he emphasized.

This day was commemorated in several other schools across the country, notably the Kola and Londe institutes in Haut-Katanga.
