The education system in the Democratic Republic of the Congo continues to expand its capacity through the construction of new school buildings. It is in this context that we should view the inauguration of five new schools, the result of a collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the government’s program to develop the 145 territories in the provinces of Tshopo, Maniema, and Tanganyika. These schools have been officially handed over to provincial authorities. The province of Tanganyika received three new schools, specifically in the Nyunzu territory, while Tshopo and Maniema each received one school, in the Ubundu and Muyengo territories, respectively. This strategic handover will help bridge the educational gap in regions that are often neglected in terms of school infrastructure. These new school facilities, distributed across the provinces of Tanganyika, Tshopo, and Maniema, pave the way for unprecedented educational opportunities for rural communities in the DRC. The inauguration ceremony took place between May 3 and 7, 2024, allowing provincial authorities to officially receive these long-awaited schools. For rural communities, these new schools represent much more than just brick-and-mortar buildings. They symbolize access to education, knowledge, and a better future. Several schools are located in remote areas where children previously had few educational options, sometimes forcing them to travel long distances to reach the nearest schools. Thanks to this joint initiative between the Congolese government and UNDP, these obstacles are about to be overcome. The new schools not only provide equitable access to education, but will also serve as community development centers, fostering growth and prosperity in these once-marginalized regions. By investing in the education of rural populations, the UNDP and the Congolese government are demonstrating their commitment to an inclusive and sustainable future for all citizens of the DRC. These five new schools are not merely buildings; they are bearers of hope, agents of change, and symbols of progress for future generations of the Congolese nation. Célestin Zeula
