As part of the celebration of International Education Day on January 24, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) office in Lubumbashi organized an event for students and education stakeholders. The event took place on Wednesday, January 24, at the Kashobwe School Complex in the presence of educational authorities from Haut-Katanga 1. In his remarks, the Provincial Chief Inspector of this educational jurisdiction, Nicolas Nyange Bizy, emphasized that, “school is the ideal environment for teaching a culture of peace; it is also the ideal environment for transforming children into true ambassadors of peace...” School is the cradle of future ambassadors of peace.” He thus noted that free primary education has enabled more than six million children to return to school to become peacemakers. Under this year’s theme, “Education for Lasting Peace,” the day served as an opportunity for UNESCO to highlight the role that education systems and teachers can play in combating hate speech.
