World Parents' Day is celebrated on June 1 each year. "Honoring parents around the world" is the theme chosen for this year's celebration in 2024. The day was established by the United Nations in its resolution of September 17, 2012. Since the 1980s, the role of the family has increasingly drawn the attention of the international community. The General Assembly has adopted several resolutions and proclaimed the International Year of the Family (1994) and the International Day of Families. In its resolution A/RES/66/292 of September 17, 2012, the General Assembly decided to proclaim June 1 as World Parents’ Day to honor parents around the world. This day is of great importance, as it reminds parents of their primary responsibility to provide for the family, protect children, and educate them; for the harmonious development of their personalities so that they may grow up in a family environment and an atmosphere of happiness, love, and understanding. Parents are the people who help their children become better people. Whether they are biological parents, stepparents, grandparents, or even adoptive parents, love for a child remains the same in everyone’s eyes. They are people who remain in our hearts under all circumstances and until the end of our lives. If parents are involved in their children’s education, the children are more engaged in their schoolwork, stay in school longer, and achieve better academic results. This also translates into long-term economic and social benefits. In a changing world, parents remain role models Even though a parent’s role in their children’s education evolves as the children grow up, it is important to remember that parents remain role models. Their attitude toward education can both inspire children and empower them throughout their own educational journey. The Global Partnership for Education believes that parents should be actively involved in their children’s education and participate in efforts to ensure that all children receive a quality education. This Global Day pays tribute to all dedicated, committed, and self-sacrificing parents who work to ensure a quality education for their children. Marie-France Pala
