Dialogue between parents and children is an excellent way to shape a child’s personality. It allows parents to guide the education they wish to impart to their child, instilling in them the values and norms that are essential for the development of their conscience. According to educational and psycho-pedagogical counselor Mr. Charly Muzadi Kanyinda, “it is very important that there be dialogue between parents and children. Parents are there to educate their children. They must instill societal values and what society expects of them, impart virtues and societal rules that will shape the child’s conscience,” he stated. Since conscience, according to Mr. Muzadi, is the knowledge a person has of their personality, their environment, and their society, it is important to cultivate it from childhood. For example, in a communist society, people live for society. Children learn to do everything to make society better; conversely, in capitalist societies, people must do everything to dominate, so children are steered toward domination and success. Parents must be available to communicate with their children. Communication within the family is a very important factor in shaping a child’s personality and culture. It is through open communication that parents instill fundamental values in their children. It is through interaction and dialogue that children learn respect, the ability to listen, and tolerance. Many of the deviations observed in our society today result from parents’ lack of responsibility in their children’s upbringing.
“If parents do not communicate with their children to tell them what society expects, we will not have the men and women of integrity that society needs,” the educational psychologist emphasized.
Parents are the primary pillars and key players in their children’s education. The life of today and tomorrow depends on the family. When families are troubled, restless, and disrupted, we will have only troubled neighborhoods and communities, and the country will suffer. It is said that if you show a child the right path from a young age, they will not stray from it when they grow up. Marie France Pala
