No students were killed during an alleged student protest in the city of Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga Province. Rumors have been circulating on social media claiming that a student was shot and killed during a protest allegedly organized by students in the city of Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga 1 Educational Province. In a statement, the Provincial Director of Haut-Katanga 1, Joseph Mwinkeu Tshiend, denied that a student had died during a demonstration, but instead cited a traffic accident that led to the deaths of a student and a motorcycle taxi driver. He made this statement during a visit to the city of Likasi, accompanied by the Provincial Director of Dinacope and the Deputy Chief Inspector of Haut-Katanga 1. “We are currently in Likasi to investigate a situation following a video that has gone viral on social media. This video depicts an alleged march that reportedly took place in Lubumbashi, according to them, which resulted in the students’ deaths by gunfire. After verification by our sources and all our departments, we have determined that this video originated in the city of Likasi, in the Likasi 2 subdivision. “It involved three students who were on a motorcycle that was involved in a collision, resulting in two deaths, including one student and the driver,” explained the Proved. On this occasion, he called for calm and reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the safety of students. PALA Marie-France
