On Tuesday, May 20, 2025, the World Organization for Early Childhood Education in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (OMEP-DRC), in collaboration with the Kwilu 2 Provincial Education Office (IPP Kwilu), organized a conference and debate aimed at raising awareness among various stakeholders in the education sector, as well as other socio-professional groups and the community of the Kwilu 2 educational province, regarding the importance of early childhood education. The proceedings, opened by Mr. Mbungu, representative of the provincial director on assignment, focused primarily on the theme “Early Childhood Education as a Driver of Community Development.” Michel Otto, president of OMEP-RDC, took this opportunity to emphasize the importance of early childhood education as an essential investment in children’s futures, thereby ensuring the sustainable development of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In his presentation, this early childhood education expert highlighted the challenges related to the integrated development and well-being of children during this crucial period. He emphasized that “children’s academic success is strongly linked to the solid educational foundation laid between the ages of 3 and 6, which serves as the basis for their long-term success.” The Challenges and Opportunities of Preschool Education Inequalities in access to preschool education, whether due to geographic location or families’ socioeconomic status, were also addressed. According to the expert, "these disparities are concerning, as they can jeopardize children’s educational future." Michel Otto called for the development of targeted policies to improve access to preschool education, citing parents’ educational level as a key factor. An innovative approach discussed during the conference was that of preschool education before birth, including references to practices involving dialogue with the fetus. This idea highlights the importance of beginning education even before birth to best prepare for children’s development. Finally, it should be emphasized that collaboration between parents, educators, and the community is essential to ensure education tailored to each stage of a child’s development. Data on the number of preschool schools in the province attests to this commitment to education. Awareness-raising initiatives must continue to ensure a better future and sustainable development for children and the nation. Marie-France Pala
