On behalf of Raïssa Malu, Minister of National Education and New Citizenship (EDU/NC), the Secretary General of the Ministry officially opened the national consultation workshop on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, in Kinshasa, dedicated to the implementation of UNESCO Recommendation 2023 on Education for Peace, Human Rights, and Sustainable Development. This workshop aims to strengthen the DRC’s commitment to peace, social justice, and sustainable development, with a particular focus on integrating three major areas into the education system: the General History of Africa (GHA), citizenship education, and education for sustainable development.
“This recommendation envisions a universal goal: an education capable of transmitting not only knowledge, but also the values, skills, and attitudes essential for living together in a complex, interconnected, and sometimes deeply divided world,” stated Alexis YOKA.
A call to rethink the entire education system: Curricula, which must further integrate a culture of peace, civic education, tolerance, human rights, and sustainable development; • Teacher training, to make teachers key actors in mediation, violence prevention, and the promotion of dialogue; • Teaching methods, designed to encourage critical thinking, participation, civic engagement, and inclusion; • Learning environments, which must be safe, non-discriminatory, and promote the values of respect and cooperation. For his part, Isaias Barreto da Rosa, UNESCO representative in the DRC, praised the initiative:
“This recommendation now serves as the global framework for making education a true driver of peace, social cohesion, and sustainability.” This workshop brought together numerous stakeholders from the education sector, civil society organizations, and several international partners. Their presence reflects a collective commitment to building an education system focused on peace, equality, justice, and sustainable development for children, youth, and adults in the DRC.
